The game is set in Willamet, Colorado, where a zombie outbreak has forced the authorities to shut down the city.

In the game, players take on the role of photojournalist Frank West, who finds himself in a shopping center with a crowd of people trying to hide from the zombies. Frank has to survive for 72 hours, save people, and figure out the cause of the zombie outbreak. The gameplay involves fighting zombies, crafting weapons, and taking photographs to gain more experience.

The game features more enemies and more types of weapons than its predecessors. It also takes players to new places in the city, including the amusement park Uranus Zone. The game is challenging, and players have to use their survival skills to stay alive.
